How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance is used to help pay for services that are designed to improve your oral and overall health. This is why your available benefits typically only cover preventive and restorative treatments. Dental checkups and cleanings, fillings, crowns, tooth extractions, root canals, bridges, etc., are all used to help you regain oral function and reduce your chances of developing cavities, gum disease, and other serious problems in the future.

While each plan is different, the general framework for PPO coverage is 100% preventive care, 80% minor restorative care, and 50% major restorative care.

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance is most commonly used when a problem has already occurred. While wellness visits are encouraged, you will not find substantial savings attributed to these yearly appointments. Instead, you’ll reduce your out-of-pocket costs if you need hospitalization, lab testing, or other more extensive and complex care.

Dental insurance, however, promotes preventive treatment, which means that these companies offer 80-100% coverage for biannual dental visits. The reason is that they will likely pay less over time because you are taking proper care of your teeth and gums throughout the year.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

In-network and out-of-network are categories that indicate whether a dentist partners with a particular dental insurance plan to offer lower fees on various services.

In-Network Coverage

TimberRidge Dental is pleased to be in-network with many dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, United Healthcare, Cigna, and MetLife. This means that we have entered into an agreement with these companies to offer eligible services at a lower rate, helping you avoid high out-of-pocket costs when you need preventive or restorative treatment.

Out-of-Network

If we are not in-network with your dental insurance company, then we are considered out-of-network, which means that you will likely pay more out of pocket for the services you receive. However, our team will do our best to make sure all the necessary paperwork is filled out when filing a claim on your behalf so that you receive the greatest reimbursement.
